Choosing a preschool in Downtown Sacramento is harder than it should be. The market is fragmented, the marketing is opaque, and most schools won't even give you a tuition number until you've toured. We hear this from parents constantly. So we wrote the guide we wish someone had given us — a neutral checklist of what to actually ask on a tour, and what to look for whether you choose us or someone else.
There are roughly 30 licensed preschools and child care centers within a fifteen-minute walk of the Capitol. They are not the same. Here are nine questions that will help you tell them apart.
1. What is your educational philosophy, in one sentence?
A school that has thought about its own approach can answer this in one breath. RIE-informed. Reggio-inspired. Montessori. Play-based. Faith-based. A school that hedges, talks vaguely about "loving environment" without naming any pedagogical foundation, or describes itself as "a little of everything" may not have done the deeper work of choosing what they believe in.
Note: it is fine — and often genuinely good — to blend approaches, as long as the school can explain which approaches and why the blend.
2. What is your discipline approach?
This is the most important question on this list. Ask it directly. The answer will tell you almost everything.
Listen for what is not said as well as what is. A school that uses time-out heavily, that mentions "consequences" without "connection," or that cannot describe a specific moment when a teacher coached a child through a conflict — that is a school running on compliance rather than emotional development. Look for language like "redirect," "co-regulate," "name the feeling," "natural consequences," "both love and limits."
A good school has clear, consistent boundaries and warm, attuned relationships. Not one or the other. Both.
3. What is the daily schedule, and what's the longest stretch of choice-based play?
Ask for the actual schedule. Then look at how much of the day is teacher-directed versus child-directed. Research from NAEYC and others suggests that long, uninterrupted blocks of self-directed play (45 minutes minimum, ideally an hour or more) are where the deepest learning happens at this age.
Be wary of schools whose schedule is fragmented into 15-minute blocks all day. Children need time to get into something.
4. How do you communicate with parents, and how often?
The answer should be specific. Daily Brightwheel updates? Weekly newsletters? Monthly conferences? Spontaneous photos? At-pickup conversation? A parent should know what their child did today before they get home, not have to interrogate a four-year-old at the dinner table.
Bonus: ask whether you can text a teacher with a worry, and how quickly you'd hear back.
5. What is the staff turnover rate, and how long has the lead teacher been here?
Turnover is the biggest hidden quality signal in early childhood education. A great preschool has teachers who stay for years, sometimes decades. A struggling preschool churns through new faces every six months, which is destabilizing for young children who need consistent attachment figures.
You can ask this directly. A school proud of its retention will give you specific numbers ("Our lead toddler teacher has been with us nine years"). A school with a turnover problem will deflect.
6. What are your tuition rates, and what's included?
A school that won't give you a number on the phone is hiding something — usually the number itself. Ask for the published rate, the discount structure, what's included (snacks, materials, enrichments, app), and what you'll be billed extra for.
For Sacramento parents specifically: ask whether the school has a State Employee Rate or any priority tuition for state workers. Several Downtown schools, including ours, have negotiated discounted rates for employees of nearby state buildings. If you work at a state building, this can save your family thousands of dollars a year.
7. What's the calendar — and how does it align with State holidays?
This matters more than parents realize. Many state employees follow the State of California holiday calendar, which has 14 paid holidays a year. If your preschool follows a different calendar — say, a Christian liturgical calendar or a long mid-summer break — you may end up paying for childcare on days you're at work and scrambling for childcare on days the school is closed but you're off.
Ask for the full annual calendar before you enroll. Compare it side by side with your work calendar.
8. Where is the closest parking, and what's drop-off actually like?
Downtown Sacramento parking is a real consideration. Some schools have dedicated drop-off zones; some require you to find street parking and walk a block in the rain. If you're doing this twice a day, every day, for years, the friction adds up.
Specifically ask: where do most parents park? Is there a loading zone? How long is the typical drop-off? If your child is a slow transition-er, a five-minute drop-off can become twenty.
9. Can I see the room my child will actually be in, with children in it?
Some schools only do tours after hours, when the rooms are empty and silent. We understand the operational reasons, but it limits what you can learn. The best tours include at least a glimpse of the actual room with actual children — how teachers speak to children, how transitions are handled, how children interact with each other.
If a school will not let you see the room with children present at all, ask why.
What this looks like in practice
A few specific things to watch for during a tour, beyond the questions:
How does the teacher greet a child whose parent is leaving? (Look for eye-level, calm, unhurried.) How is a conflict between two children handled? (Look for naming, coaching, repair — not separation and lecture.) What's on the walls? (Look for children's actual work and documentation, not store-bought posters.) How does the room smell? (Should smell like a home — food, soap, fresh air — not like industrial cleaner.) Is there outdoor access? (For a young child, outdoor time matters enormously.) Are the materials at child height? (A room full of adult-height storage tells you the children don't get to choose.)
Take notes during the tour. Compare two or three schools side by side using the same questions. You will be amazed how clearly the right one stands out.
Sacramento-specific considerations
A few things that matter in our specific city:
Proximity to the Capitol corridor. If you work at one of the state buildings near Capitol Mall, a preschool within a five-minute walk can mean the difference between a calm day and a frantic one. Many state employees use lunch break for a quick child visit, and proximity makes that possible.
State worker rates. Several Downtown schools — including Growing Mindfully — have priority tuition tiers for state employees. Ask explicitly. The savings can be significant.
Calendar alignment. Look for schools that close on State holidays (President's Day, Cesar Chavez Day, Veterans Day) so your closed-school days align with your paid days off.
Heat planning. Sacramento summers are hot. Ask how the school handles outdoor time on 100-degree days. Indoor gross-motor space matters.
